Active Communities

What is the Active Communities project?

Active Communities is an exciting sport and physical activity project based at specified zones in the Rotherham area. Thrybergh/Dalton, East Herringthorpe, and Canklow were chosen after in depth research from Sport England and Active Rotherham. They were identified as having the greatest potential for health improvement, increased longevity and community participation.

What are the aims of the project?

The scheme is aimed at getting adults more active on a regular basis, by offering affordable and sustainable activity in suitable neighbourhood locations.

“We aim to offer a range of opportunities, so people can have a variety of choices, how to make simple adjustments to their activity levels in order to Change Lives”.

We are looking to develop local capacity for sports and physical activity and will do this by supporting local clubs, providing opportunities for volunteering/placements and by assisting individuals to gain recognised training and qualifications.

How is the project funded and delivered?

The Active Communities Project is funded through Sport England’s Activation Fund, Public Health and Active Rotherham.

The funding was secured by the Rotherham Active Partnership and works with a number of local partners such as Active Regen, Places for People Leisure and Rotherham Titans to deliver its aims.

What activities are on offer?

Primarily targeting the adult population, the project seeks to increase sport and physical activity opportunities for members of the community through a diverse range of local opportunities including walking, orienteering, fitness classes, running groups and boccia.

Our activities take place in a number of locations, such as parks, playing fields, community halls, sports centres and offer something for all abilities and levels of fitness.
